Premedication
Premedication is a good idea for a number of reasons:
- sedation makes the whole process less stressfull for both the animal and vet
- the dose of anaesthetic agent can be reduced
- some of the side effects of the induction agents can be prevented, eg, bradycardia
- analgesics given before pain starts are more effective
The dogs in this class are given the sedative acepromazine sc, the sheep get their "premed" of diazepam as part of the induction injection.
