Maintenance and monitoring

Maintenance

Your animal will be kept asleep with halothane. Remember that with a vaporiser out of circle system, there is at least a five minute lag between altering the vaporiser setting and the animal's depth changing.

Start with an oxygen flow of about 2L/min and a halothane concentration of 2%, then reduce the flow rate to about 500mL/min after about 10 mins.

Monitoring

You need to monitor the animal's depth of anaesthesia and its vital signs, and record this every 5 mins.

You may also have a pulse oximeter, which measures oxygen saturation, a Doppler blood pressure monitor and an end tidal gas monitor. You are expected to remember some cardiovascular and respiratory physiology!
