longest acting - sc onset 2- 8 hr, duration 12 - 24 hr

indications

dose protocols

Cats PZI 0.25-0.5iu/kg sc once daily (morning). Feed half the calories at the time of insulin administration and the other half 6-12 hours later. Unless the cat is sick, discharge it for 5-7 days then assess glucose curve. Aim to keep the glucose concentration 3.5-5.5 mM or below the renal threshold (about 10 mM in dogs, and 13 mM in cats) with a low of 4-5 mM.

Dogs isophane or PZI. Begin with 0.5 iu/kg once daily in the morning

diabetic ketoacidosis crystalline insulin 0.25 U/kg im initially then 0.1 iu/kg every hour for patients > 10 kg. If > 3 kg but < 10 kg give 2iu initially then 1iu/hour If < 3 kg give 1 U initially then 1 U q 1 hour. Once blood glucose is 13-14 mmol/l, add glucose to the intravenous fluids to 5%, and reduce insulin to q 6-8 hours.
