Columbine

Description

Perennial herb with flower stalks up to 75cm. Leaves divided into 3 lobes form a tuft at the base of the plant. Flowers dark blue (garden varieties also yellow or pink) with 5 petals and sepals ending in a horn shaped spur.

Monk’s hood (Aconitum species)

Distribution

Garden escape on both islands.

Toxin

Possibly aconitine. Toxicity retained on drying. All parts of the plant are poisonous.

Species affected

Grazing animals and people. No cases recorded in NZ.

Clinical signs acute

Respiratory and cardiovascular depression. Vomiting and regurgitation in the horse.
